Former Aware president Josie Lau leaves DBS

SINGAPORE: The former president of the Association of Women for Action and Research (Aware), Ms Josie Lau, has left DBS Bank and joined hospitality group Overseas Union Enterprise (OUE).

She is now vice—president for centre management at Mandarin Gallery, where she oversees operations and marketing for the new premier shopping mall, Weekend TODAY has learnt.

The 48—year—old was thrust into the limelight in March, when she became embroiled in a leadership tussle at Aware. Her decision to take on the role of president of the women’s advocacy group earned her a public rebuke from DBS for ignoring its code of conduct.

At the time, she was DBS’ head of marketing, cards and unsecured loans, becoming its vice—president for network planning and deployment in May prior to her resignation.

Ms Lau, who started her new job on Thursday, said she took it because it "allows me to leverage on all my past work experience and my love for fashion retail and marketing".

OUE chief executive Thio Gim Hock said Ms Lau had "expressed her desire to look for new pastures", and he felt she might be suitable for the post. "I asked her to send in her CV and forwarded (it) to the senior vice—president (of) leasing, who interviewed her."

Mr Thio is married to lawyer Thio Su Mien, who had encouraged Ms Lau to get involved in Aware. They attend the same church, but Ms Lau stressed her hiring was "based on my merit".

Likewise Mr Thio — who has known Ms Lau, "though not very well", for over 10 years — said: "It’s easier and more desirable to employ people you already know ... Her getting the job was entirely due to her experience, qualification and personality."

Mr Thio also noted Ms Lau’s "traumatic experience" during the Aware saga which included "having her employer threatening to sack her".

When contacted, a DBS spokesman said: "Ms Lau decided to leave DBS to pursue other opportunities. It was a personal decision, and we wish her the best in her new endeavours."

Night Safari to feature a Halloween twist on fairy tales this October

SINGAPORE: Visitors to the Night Safari can expect a Halloween twist this October. Western and Asian spirits will haunt the trails of Night Safari next month. One can also expect a bloodied interpretation of your usual fairy tales.

The "Gate to Neverland" will feature familiar characters like Snow White, Beauty and the Beast and The Little Red Riding Hood.

The Halloween activities will run every Friday and Saturday in October.

Isabel Cheng, director, (Sales, Marketing & Communications), Wildlife Reserves Singapore, said: "This year’s theme is on "Scary Tales" which is actually a spoof on fairy tales. Unlike what you may be familiar with the characters in fairy tales, this is going to be totally unexpected and it’s going to be a twisted version, so it’s going to be a lot of fun." — CNA/vm

Malaysian court orders Muslim lovers caned for sex

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia – An Islamic court has ordered an unmarried couple to be caned for trying to have sex in a car in the latest of a series of harsh punishments for Muslims in Malaysia, a lawyer said Friday.

Though Malaysia has long been upheld as an example of a moderate Muslim-majority country, recent verdicts sentencing Muslims to whipping for drinking alcohol have made headlines. Two months ago, an Islamic judge triggered a national debate when he ordered a woman to be caned for drinking beer.

In the latest case, the Shariah High Court in central Selangor state sentenced the couple Wednesday to six strokes of the cane after they pleaded guilty to trying to have sex out of wedlock in their car, said prosecutor Shafezan Rusli.

Shafezan said Islamic religious police caught Mohamad Shahrin Abdul Majid, 29, and Nadiah Najat Hussin, 24, with only their undergarments on in a car at an office parking lot in May.

He said they are appealing the caning as they plan to get married soon, though they have paid the court-ordered fine of 5,000 ringgit ($1,400) each.

They could have been jailed for up to three years for the offense, the lawyer said.

Shariah laws apply to Muslims, who make up about 60 percent of the 28 million population, in all personal matters. Non-Muslims _ Chinese, Indians and other minorities _ are not subject to the laws.

Earlier this week, an Islamic court in another state ordered an Indonesian Muslim man to be whipped six times and jailed a year for drinking liquor at a restaurant.

In July, the same court had sentenced a Malaysian woman to six strokes of the cane and a fine for drinking beer in public. The caning, which would be the first time a Malaysian woman has received the punishment, has not been carried out yet. Many see the sentence as a setback for the country's reputation as a moderate Muslim nation.

PM Lee calls for unity to face challenges ahead

SINGAPORE: Singapore’s economy contracted by 6.5 per cent in the first half of this year. In his annual televised National Day message on Saturday evening, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said the country is now in a stronger position than at the start of the year.
As long as Singaporeans remain united in facing the challenges ahead, he believes the country will pull through.

While Singapore could not avoid the global economic storm, Mr Lee said the country took proactive action such as bringing the Budget forward and drawing on past reserves for schemes like Jobs Credit.

Now, with the global economic situation stabilising, the country’s economy has bounced back strongly in the second quarter. Despite being among the worst—hit economies, it still has one of the lowest unemployment rates in the world.

"But it’s too early to celebrate. The outlook remains clouded. The advanced economies aren’t expected to bounce back soon. Our exports remain much lower than last year, and companies like SIA are still facing very tough conditions. We might see another wave of retrenchments later in the year, so we must stay on guard for more challenges to come," said the prime minister.

Despite this adverse external environment, Mr Lee said this does not mean Singapore cannot grow. Businesses and workers are beginning to adjust to the new environment by looking for new opportunities and going for re—training.

He said opportunities still exist, especially in Asia. In fact, the Economic Strategies Committee — in collaboration with the private sector — is now looking for new ways to transform the economy, with its report due next year.

While the current difficulties look daunting, Mr Lee said they should be seen against a longer perspective.

"Over this half century, Singapore has encountered many serious challenges — racial riots in the 60s, oil shocks in the 70s, a major recession in the 80s, the Asian Crisis in the 90s, the 9/11 attacks and SARS in this decade. Each time our people have rallied and prevailed," he said.

"This unity is key to our success in many fields. We must work hard to strengthen it, and to bridge potential divides within our society, be it between Singaporeans and new arrivals, between rich and poor, or most fundamental of all, between the different races and religions."

Looking ahead, he called on Singaporeans to respect each other’s beliefs and enlarge the secular common space.

The full speech and video of PM Lee’s National Day message are available in the National Day 2009 special report.

Singapore's most wanted man recaptured in Malaysia

KUALA LUMPUR (AFP) - - The alleged leader of an Islamic militant group accused of plotting to crash an airliner in Singapore has been arrested in Malaysia after more than a year on the run, authorities said Friday.

Prime Minister Najib Razak said Mas Selamat bin Kastari, who escaped from a high-security detention centre in Singapore by crawling through a toilet window, was plotting new attacks on the city-state when he was detained.

"We apprehended him here, his main focus at the time was Singapore," he told reporters. "He was planning a lot of things in Singapore."

"I congratulate the police on arresting someone who is deemed able to pose a threat to security," he said.

Home Minister Hishammuddin Hussein said Mas Selamat was being held under internal security laws but would not confirm reports he was arrested on April 1 in Johor state, which is separated from Singapore by a narrow waterway.

"We are becoming an expert on him so hopefully this time he won't escape us, and the Singaporean experience will help," Hishamuddin said of the Indonesian-born militant who has escaped custody several times.

Malaysian police chief Musa Hasan said Mas Selamat was detained early last month along with two other suspected militants in a joint operation by Singapore and Malaysian police.

"We are in contact with our counterparts (in Singapore and Indonesia) and have informed them about what we have gathered from them," he told AFP.

Mas Selamat is said to be the head of the Singapore cell of Jemaah Islamiyah (JI), an underground group linked to Al-Qaeda and blamed for the 2002 Bali bombing and other bloody attacks in Southeast Asia.

Singapore officials allege he was part of a plot to hijack an airliner in Bangkok and crash it into Singapore's Changi airport -- one of Asia's busiest -- in 2001 following the September 11 attacks that year in the United States.

Now 48, he escaped from his high-security detention centre in Singapore on February 27 last year after squeezing through a toilet window that had no bars and climbing over a fence.

His flight triggered a huge manhunt, but a flood of tips from the public, some inspired by a bounty of one million Singapore dollars (647,520 US dollars) put up by two local businessmen, turned out to be false alarms.

The affair made the strict city-state an object of ridicule and triggered a sweeping review of security measures.

Najib said he had managed to enter Malaysia a few days after leaving the detention facility.

Singapore Home Affairs Minister Wong Kan Seng told broadcaster Channel NewsAsia that Mas Selamat swam across the Johor Strait that separates the two countries, using an improvised flotation device.

The militant had not been formally charged at the time of his escape, and was being held under Singapore's Internal Security Act which -- like the Malaysian equivalent -- allows for detention without trial.

He had fled Singapore in December 2001 after a security operation against Jemaah Islamiyah but was arrested in Indonesia in 2006 and handed back.

"He is an extremely skilled and dangerous terrorist and the fact that he has been recaptured improves the security situation in Singapore and the region," said John Harrison, a security analyst at Singapore's Nanyang Technological University.

"This is irrespective of what he may or may not have been able to accomplish during his escape," he told AFP.

Sidney Jones, an analyst with the International Crisis Group, applauded the arrest, but said it did not erase the threat posed by regional militants.

"In some ways the bigger danger will still come from the people at large," she told AFP from Jakarta.

"I think we've got a number of little splinters. I don't think this arrest will change their strategies."

About SHE

S.H.E is a Taiwanese girl group whose members are Selina Ren, Hebe Tian, and Ella Chen. The name of the group is an alphabetism derived from the first letter of each member's name. Since releasing their first album Girls Dorm (2001), S.H.E has recorded 10 albums with sales totalling over 4.5 million,[4] and set ticketing records in each of their two concert tours. The group has acted in seven drama series, hosted two variety shows, and contributed 10 songs to six drama soundtracks. S.H.E has endorsed more than 30 companies and products, including Coca-Cola and World of Warcraft.[5][6] Thanks largely to S.H.E's success, other Taiwanese record labels began forming their own girl groups.

In 2000, Ren, Tian and Chen signed up for a singing contest, and the winner, Ren, was awarded a record contract. Tian and Chen, who were both finalists, joined Ren to form S.H.E. The trio frequently covers songs by other artists, and performs original compositions. The group produces albums under the HIM International Music label. Avex Asia distributed S.H.E's music in Hong Kong, but transferred this role to WOW Music in 2007. EMI Music China is the distributor in Singapore and the People's Republic of China.

Also, this reminds me to have simple faith like a child and also to continuously receive and act on – be it Holy Communion, anointing oil, tithing… Cos there is power in these! The manifestations will come!
